    A year ago, living in a charming old house in Dover on an acre of land, with a beautiful swimming pool, and gardens that were nothing short of spectacular, I never imagined that today I’d be living in an apartment in the Pinehills. At 71, I never saw the divorce coming but come it did, and the house needed to be sold. We’d been in Dover nine years and in Needham for 28 before that, where we raised our two sons. I’d been to the Pinehills a few times before I came to look at apartments.

    A few days after I was born in November 1953, my father snapped a picture of me in my mother’s arms, our German shepherd Carly lying at Mom’s feet. I grew up looking at that photo, made spectacular by a dramatic cliff and the brilliant blue water just a few feet away. I was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, when my dad, a pediatrician and Air Force captain, was stationed at Ramey Air Force Base.

    Five years ago, I persuaded my best friend Albie to take a road trip with me. We left Boston on a cool mid-April day, dipped our toes in the Pacific at Half Moon Bay, California in mid-May, and arrived home on Memorial Day weekend, 9,200 miles later, having touched 30 states during our journey. Actually, Albie didn’t need much persuading, he just hopped in the car, and off we went for Albie, you see, was a Yellow Lab/Golden Retriever mix we’d rescued from a high-kill shelter in Louisiana in 2012.

    Two days before Christmas, I received a Facebook message from a stranger. “Hi Peter,” it began, “my name is Al Sodaro and I’m a former patient of your Dad.” My father was a pediatrician, and Al wanted to share holiday greetings and a childhood story involving a talk he’d had with Dad about Hanukkah, a holiday Al hadn’t known anything about. “I could never say it properly,” Al wrote.
