F-M track and field opens season with meet against C-NS

ONONDAGA COUNTY – Two top-level track and field teams opened their season against each other Monday afternoon when Fayetteville-Manlius took on Cicero-North Syracuse and earned plenty of titles along the way. Nik Domashenko tore through the boys 100-meter dash in 10.63 seconds, the quickest in New York State early this season. He then won the 400-meter dash in 51.21 ahead of Will Beecher’s 54.06 and the 200-meter dash in 22.59 to Alex Shim’s 23.32.
Cazenovia girls, boys lacrosse teams sweep to victories

CENTRAL NEW YORK – All area high school lacrosse games got postponed last Tuesday night, a rare instance of extreme weather – in this case, heavy snow – taking everyone off the fields. Once the snow melted and the turf cleared, games resumed and Cazenovia won big on the girls side last Thursday night, the Lakers putting away Bishop Ludden/Bishop Grimes in an 18-2 romp. A series of draws won by Charlie Prior and Ella Gale led to a constant attack and a 13-1 halftime advantage.

CENTRAL NEW YORK – Bad weather last week was the precise reason why the Cazenovia and Chittenango softball teams had all-weather fields in which it could play. Still, it affected the schedule following last Monday’s pair of games where the Lakers and Bears both broke the 20-run barrier on the way to easy victories.

CENTRAL NEW YORK – A pair of impressive wins to start the 2025 season may have lured the West Genesee girls lacrosse team into an early sense of complacency. If that was the case, Section V’s Penn Yan nearly got rid of it last Monday night, the Class D school pushing the Wildcats all the way to the final seconds.
Bishop Ludden, Westhill baseball maintain fast starts

CENTRAL NEW YORK – All of the area’s high school baseball teams were glad to get to spring break following a week where numerous games had to get postponed by cold or wet weather. Before it all deteriorated, Bishop Ludden went to Marcellus last Monday afternoon and got a six-inning gem from pitcher Jimmy Westers on the way to defeating the Mustangs 5-0.

CENTRAL NEW YORK – The week of the April school break sees the Marcellus and Solvay softball teams make their way to tournament action in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where it is much warmer and drier than what it left behind. Before the snow hit early last week and the rain followed, a handful of games did get in, including West Genesee meeting Whitesboro for the first time since they squared off in the 2024 sectional Class AA final.

CENTRAL NEW YORK – Before the weather turned cold and wet again, a few area high school boys tennis teams got in their first matches of the 2025 season and found some success along the way. Skaneateles met up with Westhill on April 4 and it was the Lakers prevailing 5-0, with one forfeit along with four other points claimed in straight sets. In singles it was Noah Soderberg over Jackson Flegel 6-1, 6-0, while Jake Salzhauer did not surrender a game shutting out Zane Eldred 6-0, 6-0.
Liverpool, C-NS boys lacrosse head into early-season clash undefeated

Though it’s only in mid-April, the boys lacrosse battle between Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse Tuesday afternoon at Bragman Stadium will boost the confidence of whichever unbeaten team wins it. The Warriors are 3-0 in the wake of last Saturday’s game against Section II’s Bethlehem, where it pushed past the Eagles 12-7 almost entirely on the backs of Brady Michaud and Chris Matott.
Flag football, boys lacrosse Bees pick up victories

For the Baldwinsville flag football team, all that a 14-14 tie with Liverpool in the April 1 season opener did was bring out a higher level of play from the Bees in the games which followed. Back-to-back shutouts against Sherburne-Earville and Syracuse OnTech by a combined 78-0 margin followed, and in last Friday’s game against Oneida at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium the run continued.
Baldwinsville girls lacrosse starts season 1-2

In its long and proud history which includes a pair of state Class A championships, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team rarely has experienced anything close to what it did on April 5 at South Jefferson. Against a Spartans team which reached the state Class D semifinals a season ago, the Bees were overwhelmed in all phases of the game and took an 18-5 defeat, though it was more a tribute to the opposition’s high level of play than anything wrong with B’ville.
