In the past…I sometimes experienced this dread around the 3 word phrase, “Time for dinner!”On the one hand…my work is completed…let’s eat while it’s hot…hooray! But on the other…it meant we had to wrestle through the end of Bluey time. We a “screens are a tool” approach…they aren’t inherently good or bad. We don’t have to feel shame around screen time…but they also are just a tool, like a hammer or miter saw. Our 3 year old loves when my wife tucks her in to bed. Not only does she love it, she brags about it. “Daddy, mommy tuck me” she frequently reminds me alllll evening when it’s Catherine’s turn to do bedtime. Sometimes as soon as I walk in the door she lets me know the score. You see, we split bedtime. We have 6 kids so we could split them up but we find that it’s much more relaxing to have one parent do it all so the other can get something done or just have a moment.

“I don’t think he has ADHD…he can play Fortnite for HOURS so I know he can focus when he wants”I heard this recently…and many times over the years. Parents come in to discuss attention and focus because they’re having concerns at school & home…but they see bursts of focus, especially when doing a preferred activity like video games, so they assume that it’s a choice. He can focus on his iPad..he must be choosing to not turn it on for homework.
