    Despite the global tariff chaos in the background, canola futures in April seemed to weather the storm in a steady uptrend as tightening supply projections and the need to ration demand provide support. But same can’t be said for Canada’s largest crop: wheat. Both the futures and Prairie cash bids for wheat have found themselves under pressure, with little supportive news on the horizon.

    Ongoing tariff-related trade uncertainty has done little to slow the upward trend of canola contracts on the ICE Futures platform, with values gaining over a hundred dollars per tonne off their nearby lows in the span of a month. The most-active July contract settled just above $680 per tonne on April 16, having posted losses on only five of the 22 sessions since hitting a contract low of $569.50 on March 17.

    “March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb,” says the old proverb commonly tied to the idea that the month often starts with the last hurrah of winter before giving way to spring as the calendar turns to April. From an agricultural futures perspective, you could say March 2025 came in like the Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil as the general chaos brought on by United States trade policies roiled markets.
