너무 빨리 달리지 말고, ‘느린 달리기’—요즘 말로는 ‘섹시 페이스’를 유지할 것. 이게 전문가들의 핵심 메시지다. 부상을 무릅쓰지 말고, 제대로 달려보자. 달리기를 하다 보면 마주치는 당황스러운 순간. 나보다 몸이 좋지 않으며, 훨씬 나이가 많고, 겉으로 보기에 운동을 꾸준히 해온 것 같지 않은 사람이 큰 힘들이지 않고 나를 지나쳐 갈 때. 물론 이건 내 경험이다. 느리게 달리는 건 나에겐 부끄러운 일이다. 그래선 안 된다는 걸 알면서도, 그런 기분이 드는 걸 막을 수 없다. 이 기사 작성을 위해 전문가와 얘기하면서 나의 페이스에 대한 생각이 완전히 바뀌었다. 지금 이 순간, 나는 자랑스럽게 느리게 달리는 사람임을 선언하고자 한다. 느린 달리기의 함정문제는 두 가지다. 첫째, 달리기는 대개 공공장소에서 이뤄진다. 헬스장 러닝머신조차도 작지만 약간은 무대 같은 곳이고, 야외에서 뛰면 사람들의 시선에 완전히 노출된다. 둘째, 웨이트나 축구, 럭비와는 달리, 속도는 아주 공정한 비교 기준이다.

Sleep comes easily to me: in meetings, while filling out online forms, at the ballet, when anyone explains anything connected with personal finance. However, once in bed, a lot of this natural gift leaves me. You will often find me pointlessly lively between 3am and 4am, having woken up half-bonkers with worries about anything from roof repairs to our purpose on earth. One thing that has always helped is my sessions lifting weights in the gym.

But still, aged 60, I sprint up hills, jump on boxes, run 10km and lift heavy weights without any joint issues. I’ve never been one for stretching, and I was put off yoga: yet, so far, it’s all worked out.

Speaking from experience, when you go for a run and someone considerably older—who's slow running and doesn’t look like they’ve put much time into their fitness—passes you without appearing to make a significant effort, it’s a confronting moment. Running slowly is something I find embarrassing. I know I shouldn’t feel that way, and I don’t want to, but I do.
