COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — In April 1911, Columbus became the first U.S. city to collect garbage door-to-door using horse-drawn carts. These carts transported trash to the Columbus Garbage Reduction Plant on Short Street in the Brewery District. In the early 1920s, the city built a stable on McKinley Avenue to house its garbage collection horses and wagons. However, an equine distemper outbreak in early 1924 killed all 20 of the city's garbage horses.

The penitentiary, which operated near downtown Columbus from 1834 until its demolition in 1998, was the site of a devastating blaze that claimed the lives of 322 inmates and injured 30 others. The fire began in a cell block housing 800 inmates, many of whom were locked in for the night and pleaded to be released from their smoke-filled cells. The chaos quickly escalated into a riot, complicating the efforts of firefighters who arrived on the scene.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — On February 13, 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln's journey to Washington, D.C., was nearly derailed by a bomb threat. During his whistle-stop tour, a live bomb was discovered in his train car, set to detonate just 15 minutes after departure. Fortunately, the explosive was safely removed, allowing Lincoln's train to continue its journey.
