    Severe disability due to large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke can be avoided by emergency mechanical thrombectomy (MT)1 but provision varies nationally and internationally according to the availability of specialist facilities. Across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, only 26 hospitals can offer treatment,2 and the majority of stroke patients are instead admitted to local non-MT hospitals.

    NEWPORT–At 6:00 am on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, starting from the Boat Ramp at Newport City Dock, 20-year-old, Vera Rivard, and her sister, 17-year-old Margaret Rivard, both of Derby, VT and Springfield, NH, stepped into the waters of Lake Memphremagog, with the intention of completing a 50-mile international tandem double-cross of the lake from Newport to Magog, Quebec and back. They were not embarking as solo swimmers but as sisters, as Team Rivard engaged in a tandem swim.

    On Monday, July 15, 2024, starting at 12:01 am and leaving 10 minutes apart, three open water swimmers set out from Newport City Dock and Boat Ramp attempting to swim the 25-mile length of Lake Memphremagog, In Search of Memphre. Joe Infantino, 32, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, entered the water at 12:21 am, swam through the night and a steady rain for about an hour during the morning, and cleared the water at Magog Bay Park in Magog, Quebec at 11:37 am for a time of 11 hours and 16 minutes.

    Two Swimmer Scouts joined us In Search for Memphre on July 8, 2024, swimming the 25-mile length of Lake Memphremagog between Newport, Vermont and Magog, Quebec. Sara Wolf, 55, of Auburn, Alabama, started from the Newport City Dock at 12:01 am and completed her swim at the beach of Magog Bay Park in Magog, Quebec 17 hours and 22 minutes later. Isabella Gerardi, 19, of Seekonk, Massachusetts entered the water 10 minutes after Sara at 12:11 am, completing her swim to Magog in 14 hours and 1 minute.
