    The Trump administration has named Jaye Hamby director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and appointed new policy advisers, chiefs of staff for four USDA mission areas, and senior personnel for communications and external relations. Hamby “led and directed proprietary research efforts” before joining USDA, according to a department press release. He has a doctorate in agricultural education with a specialization in ag economics from Oklahoma State University.

    The cost of groceries jumped in March on higher prices for meat, eggs and milk, despite an overall decline in the cost of living. The overall Consumer Price Index fell 0.1% last month driven by a 6.3% drop in gasoline prices but the index for food eaten at home rose 0.5% after being flat in February, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday. Even with that increase the index for food eaten at home is up just 2.4% since March 2024.
