Car Importers Association of Kenya (Ciak) has sued Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) over the agency’s new motor vehicle price list that will form the basis for collecting taxes on used models arriving in Kenya from July 1. The taxman recently updated the Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) which forms the basis for levying six taxes including excise and import duty after depreciation.

A petro-chemical gas transportation firm has lost an appeal against a decision that revoked its environment impact assessment (EIA) permit for the establishment of a 15,000-tonne liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) depot in Mombasa’s Changamwe area. The Environment and Land Court (ELC) in Mombasa dismissed the appeal by Eleven Energy Ltd challenging a decision by the National Environment Tribunal to revoke its license.

A former judge has gone to court challenging a decision by some Ministry of Lands officials purporting to cancel a title to his prime parcel of land in Mombasa on the basis that it has been reserved for a school. Mr Said Juma Chitembwe accuses the officials, including those from a state lands agency, of violating his rights by taking his land and awarding it to Mombasa Parents Club (Nyali Primary & Kindergarten) without compensation.

Two activists have sued Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga over an alleged forceful incursion into parcels of land where Kencont Logistics Services Ltd, a company linked to Kanu chairman Gideon Moi, conducts its business in Mombasa. Ms Zipporah Juma and Mr Salim Mvuria, members of Bunge la Mwananchi (Mombasa Branch), claim that Mr Mainga, acting through agents and police proxies under his command, coordinated the incursion on the evening of May 16.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga's name has been dragged into a dispute over ownership of a prime parcel of land linked to the iconic Kongo Mosque in Diani, Kwale. Two residents who claim ownership of the land told a Mombasa court that Mr Odinga stated he had made reports to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to conduct investigations.
