U.S. stocks lost $6.6 trillion over two days last week after President Donald Trump announced his global tariff plan, a sudden rout that has no doubt compounded the worries of fundraisers already rattled by the administration’s cuts — and by a chorus of funders insisting that no, they cannot “fill the gaps.”That refrain — philanthropy’s inability to make up for lost government funding — has been invoked incessantly since January 20, and it’s almost always taken for granted.

He’ll be back. It’s not the result most of us hoped for: With an unabashed authoritarian once again headed for the White House, the path forward for American democracy — and the entire civic sector — has been thrown into a fresh state of confusion. For progressive funders, ahead looms the unraveling of rights, policies and services they’ve backed for decades and with millions, sometimes billions of dollars.
