More often than not, euphemisms are used to describe female genitals. I won’t list them, but they are numerous and, let’s say, colourful. Some are babyish terms parents use when talking to children. Others are schoolyard slang that, oddly, remain in common usage. I’ve lost count of the times people have come into my busy north London surgery telling me they’re itchy or sore ‘down there’. And even doctors I know will end up using the catch-all ‘private parts’.

But when is a bit of baby sick the sign of something more? And how do you tell if your baby is suffering from silent reflux? For some parents, it could be as obvious as your breastfed or bottle-fed baby being sick after every feed. For others, though, the symptoms of silent reflux in their baby are less directly related to feeding, being unsettled, crying lots and failing to gain weight.

During the pandemic I saw more penises than normal. And, as a GP, that was a good thing. Men who suddenly found they had more free time were able to devote a little more attention to their genitals, it seemed. Or that was my theory, at least. They’d come into my busy north London practice, clearly fairly embarrassed – although they needn’t be. Some said they’d put off seeking help until their condition became intolerable, because they thought an examination might be mortifying or even painful.

Dr Philippa Kaye throws light on some embarrassing, painful and confusing issues Suzannah is in her early forties and had had her symptoms for a couple of years before she came to talk to me. She said that she often had thrush and had periods of itching with a vaginal discharge which tended to clear up with a course or two of over the counter thrush treatment. So in the beginning she just thought her symptoms were due to thrush.

Back pain can be miserable to live with but there are ways to manage the discomfort and find relief, says Dr Philippa Kaye…There are a few health issues which come up frequently in general practice. In the winter months we will see lots of children with coughs and colds, and in the spring we start to see people with hay fever. However, one of the most prevalent complaints seen in general practice all year round is one which my patient, Carla, presented with a few months ago: back pain.
