    Researchers at the University of Toronto have developed a method that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and Google Maps' Street View images to glean more detailed information about buildings—such as their age and floor area. This additional data can then be used to assess building stock, construction material flows and embodied greenhouse gases, which are estimates of the emissions generated by the production and transportation of goods.

    A U of T Engineering alumnus has been awarded a very modern prize for invention and design of a space-age structure dating back to the 1970s. Lembit Maimets (CivE 5T6) earned first place with the International Special Award for his entry of Self-unfolding satellite with gravity from the World Invention Intellectual Property Association (WIIPA). Additionally, a special honour was given from the Association of Thai Innovation and Invention Promotion.

    On October 1, the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto welcomed a visiting delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, headed by His Excellency Bandar Alkhorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia. The official visit to Canada aims to enhance industrial and mining cooperation between the two countries, explore mutual opportunities in industry and mining, and attract foreign investments to the Kingdom.

    This past June, U of T Engineering students, along with peers at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, participated in Robot Made: Design Build, a hands-on design build project. The undergraduate and graduate participants engaged in research and active learning in the process of computational design and digital fabrication, while exploring techniques for designing, simulating and digitally fabricating timber systems.
