Linda Lowery was just 14 years old in 1965 when she marched 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in support of voting rights. She and several other Black teenagers were with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. that day, taking it upon themselves to demonstrate for civil rights at a young age. On Jan. 2, 1965, King spoke before 700 people at Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, which launched what is recognized now as the Selma Voting Rights Campaign.

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Monday that he plans to nominate a conservative California attorney to lead a critical division of the Department of Justice. Harmeet Dhillon, a former vice chairwoman of the California GOP and a national committeewoman for the Republican National Committee, was selected by Trump to serve as assistant attorney general for civil rights at the Justice Department.

Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price (D) appears to have been recalled from office in California. Local election officials said all precincts had reported, and the recall vote was ahead by nearly 30 points. Price, who has been DA since 2023, originally ran for the office on a criminal justice reform platform, focusing on not charging minors as adults and holding possible rogue police officers accountable.
