1 INTRODUCTION Leaves and fruits play pivotal roles in the growth and development of seed plants. Foliage leaves, the primary photosynthetic organs in most vascular land plants (Wright et al., 2004), are instrumental in converting solar irradiance into chemical energy through photosynthesis (Rascher & Nedbal, 2006). Meanwhile, fruits, particularly fleshy ones, play a key role in seed dispersal by providing nourishment for various frugivorous animals (Willson, 1994).
