Westmorland and Furness Council, in Cumbria, which has almost £200m worth of debt, expects to raise £10.7m from imposing the premium on its 6,000 second home owners. However, the council has committed to spend just £1m per year towards affordable housing schemes, split between £150,000 on planning and £850,000 towards the delivery of new homes. It means for every £1 raised, 9p will go towards providing locals with affordable housing solutions.

The Royal Mint has also introduced smaller-sized gold coins and bars, starting from £108, known as "fractional products" to further lower the entry point.
