The most famous bird strike in aviation history happened in 2009, when a US Airways A320 flew into a flock of Canada geese just after taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA), which caused both engines to malfunction. Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey B. Skiles flew the damaged aircraft to land in the Hudson River. Miraculously, all passengers and crew survived. But bird strikes happen every day and almost all of them don’t end as spectacularly.

Research suggests pilots may have a few personality traits in common, traits that can work for us or against us at times. A NASA paper published in 2004 reported the results of personality surveys completed by 93 commercial pilots, and derived a "pilot personality profile" that aligned well with similar work done previously with military pilots.

Suppose you want to fly to an unfamiliar airport. You’ve done your research—planned your route, studied the airport procedures and the diagram, and checked the weather and the notams. All your pilot “Spidey senses” tell you that you’re ready to go. The flight there is beautifully uneventful; you’ve followed all the rules and even greased the landing in this new place.

Lufthansa Technik will build a new facility in northern Portugal to expand its capacities for the repair of engine parts and components. The Hamburg-based company, which is the engineering unit of the German airline group, said on 9 December that the new 54,000sq m plant in Santa Maria da Feira, near Porto, will be completed by the end of 2027.

This is truly tragic. I watched so many of his safety analysis videos and saw him speak in Oshkosh.

We are very saddened to report that Richard McSpadden, AOPA Senior Vice President, died in an aircraft accident outside Lake Placid, New York, on Sunday afternoon. Our thoughts are with Richard’s family at this time. We will provide more details as they are available.
