1 Introduction The objective of a randomized clinical trial is to demonstrate that a new treatment has superior efficacy than a control. In a typical trial design, an assumed effect size, that is, the magnitude of the difference in an efficacy endpoint between the new treatment and the control, is often used to calculate a sample size that provides a target unconditional power for rejecting the null hypothesis of no efficacy.
