Police have arrested five people with a large quantity polythene and a pickup truck in the capital's Bangshal area. The arrestees are Anam Fakhrul Islam, 50, Md Habibur Rahman, 26, Enamul Haque, 28, Md Azizul Islam, 35, and Md Zakir Sardar, 32. Acting on a tip-off, a team of Bangshal police set up a checkpoint in the area in front of Asian Palace on Abul Hasnat Road last evening. Around 6:35pm, a pickup truck and three battery-run vans were stopped at the checkpoint.

The government is intensifying its efforts to enforce the ban on polythene bags, urging all citizens to comply with the directives to stop using such bags. Non-compliance will result in strict actions, said Tapan Kumar Biswas, additional secretary and chair of the monitoring committee on the polythene issue, during a monitoring operation at New Market Kitchen Market in the capital today. Talking to reporters, he said since November 3, authorities have conducted 166 raids to enforce the ban.
