Nearly a quarter of the money spent on National's flagship FamilyBoost policy has gone towards running the scheme, instead of helping families. Of the $62 million spent so far, just $48m has been paid out to parents, while $14m has gone towards administration costs. Claims began being accepted by Inland Revenue (IRD) for the early childhood education rebate in October last year. Families can claim 25% of their weekly cost of childcare, up to a maximum of $75.

Capital expenditure — new money set aside in the Budget to maintain or upgrade assets — will be higher than originally forecast when the Government delivers its Budget in two weeks' time. In a speech to Business New Zealand on Thursday, the Prime Minister said the money, which would be split mostly across health, education, defence, and transport, will total $6.8 billion.

Former Labour Party leader and Minister Andrew Little is actively considering running for Wellington Mayor. Little – who is currently a consultant for a law firm in Wellington – has confirmed to RNZ he is considering taking a tilt at the October election, saying he would have more to say soon. He left Parliament following Labour's 2023 election defeat after first entering politics in 2011.
