It’s not yet 100 days into a new government which the prime minister said would rebuild trust in politics, and that battle is already looking lost. A government that promised to restore integrity in public life has been beset by rows over freebies while its principal plank — to deliver on its promises in the long term — is fraught with risk. Some say it was a mistake to ever put trust on the agenda, that such promises are doomed to fail. They are wrong.

In his conference speech, Keir Starmer said that a Labour government would be “fixed on a single-minded purpose to govern for the long term”. This was a week after “long-term decisions for a brighter future” was the slogan on Rishi Sunak’s conference lectern. In political circles, there is increasing acknowledgement that the UK’s culture of short-term, reactive policymaking is a problem. The failure to think and act long-term is nothing new.
