Luke Humphries strengthened his dominance on the oche by defeating Michael van Gerwen and became the World Matchplay Darts Title. A terrific tournament ended with a fantastic final between Humphries and MvG and it was a symbolic showdown for many reasons. Cool Hand Luke became only the second player to record five ton-plus averages on the Winter Gardens stage, a record he now shares with the great Phil Taylor.

Carabao Cup Final Wembley Sunday 3pmSunday’s Carabao Cup Final at Wembley will be a replay of the 2022 Final when Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. The shootout saw a staggering 21 successful penalty kicks before Blues keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga blazed over the bar. Ironically Kepa had been brought on towards the end of extra-time by Thomas Tuchel, replacing Edouard Mendy, for his perceived penalty saving ability! Hardly an inspired substitution.
