Mi edad interna ronda los 28 años, pero cuando añoro cosas que la tecnología ha vuelto obsoletas me siento profundamente de 43. Una de esas cosas es irme de vacaciones sin estar en contacto constante, como ocurría cuando el precio de enviar un mensaje de texto era parecido al de tomarse una copa de vino, antes de la llegada del WhatsApp. A lo largo de este año me he dado cuenta de lo mucho que el flujo incesante de información me dificulta la desconexión.

Though my internal age is set to about 28, the time when I feel profoundly 43 is when I get nostalgic for things rendered obsolete by technology. One of those things was being able to go on holiday without being continually contacted, because the price of sending a text message was the same as a glass of wine. WhatsApp has obliterated that. Over the past year, I’ve noticed how much harder it has been to switch off as a result of the incessant flow of information.

Years ago, I realised how important it was to diversify the age brackets within my friendship groups. Not just because my life doesn’t really look like the life of mates my age – I don’t have kids, I’m not married and I have no desire to move to the suburbs or the countryside – but because it’s hard to evolve when you’re in your own echo chamber. Friends who are younger than me often challenge my existing world view, and friends who are older than me provide perspective and wisdom.

Last year, you couldn’t click on a news site or meet friends for dinner without the cost of living crisis being a central part of the conversation. From the price of butter to energy bills doubling, 2023 felt drenched in fear that costs would keep escalating. I spent most of that summer as a freelancer worrying that work would dry up and that money would be tight, until autumn arrived and, with a sigh of relief, an influx of work.

In my thirties, I was surprised to feel a particular brand of angst around friendship that I hadn’t felt since my early twenties. During that time, I was terrified of losing my friends after we left university and pursued different careers, moving to different cities. While there were other seismic changes since that time, particularly when people started getting married, the biggest one that I was unprepared for, was how much having children would change my friendships.
