An elderly man died after a fire broke out in his flat on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. Fire brigade officials, who rescued his wife, said the entire flat was full of smoke. The blaze, which was confined to the top-floor flat of the six-storey Haripreet apartments, was likely caused by a short circuit. Officials said Ambika Joshi, 65, is out of danger. The couple’s two-bedroom flat is on the sixth floor of the building, they added.

The BMC has started installing barricades on medians at Marine Drive to stop pedestrians from crossing the road. Though the civic body said the decision to install the barriers was taken following requests from the Marine Drive traffic division and a residents’ association, the latter is not happy with the installation. The association said the barricades won’t serve the purpose and instead, will restrict the view.

The BMC has received 117 suggestions/objections about the published list of 32,407 eligible hawkers in the city. The suggestions will be scrutinised at ward levels within two weeks and the final report will be tabled in the Town Vending Committee (TVC). The final list will be sent to the labour commissioner for the election of representatives of hawkers who will be included in the TVC. This progress in the scheme to give licences to hawkers in the city comes after six years.

The insufficient rain in catchment areas means there is possibility of an increase in water cuts in the city from 10 per cent to 15 per cent. If the rain continues in this manner, by the end of this month, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) could take the decision. According to the BMC lake levels data, there was 34.09 per cent water stock in the seven lakes till Monday morning. Last year, there was 82.09 per cent water stock at the same time.

Residents of Borivli West are both annoyed and amused by the shut-and-open case of a bridge over a minor nullah in Gautam Nagar near Savarkar Garden. Two months ago, the BMC had shut the bridge saying it was dilapidated. A month later, locals said, it was opened without repair. They claim it is often shut and opened. A BMC official claimed the bridge continues to remain shut, but miscreants remove the boards that block it, at nights.
