    POLICE are investigating an alleged attack on a prison officer by Axel Rudakubana, who is serving a life sentence for killing three girls in Southport last year. The incident took place last Thursday (8) at HMP Belmarsh in London. It is understood that the officer had boiling water thrown over them. According to the Ministry of Justice, the officer was taken to hospital as a precaution and discharged the same day.

    THE Women's World Cup will be expanded from 32 to 48 teams, like the men's competition, starting with the 2031 edition, FIFA announced on Friday (9). The FIFA Council unanimously agreed to enlarge the competition "given the remarkable recent strides made by women's football across the world," the sport's governing body said. The 48-team tournament will adopt a 12-group format, increasing the total number of matches from 64 to 104 and extending the tournament by one week, FIFA said.

    THE International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday (9) approved a loan programme review for Pakistan, unlocking around $1 billion (£790 million) in much-needed funds and greenlighting a new $1.4bn (£1.1bn) bailout despite India's objections. Pakistan came to the brink of default in 2023, as a political crisis compounded an economic downturn and drove the nation's debt burden to terminal levels. It was saved by a $7bn (£5.5bn) bailout from the IMF -- its 24th since 1958.

    PAKISTAN launched counterattacks against India on Saturday (10) after three of its air bases were struck overnight, and as the conflict between the neighbours spiralled towards a full-blown war that sparked calls against "miscalculation". Indian Wing Commander Vyomika Singh told a briefing on Saturday there were "several high-speed missile attacks" on air bases, but "limited damage" to equipment.

    A traditional Indian New Year celebration brought hundreds of UK-based Kannadigas together last weekend as Kannada Balaga UK marked Ugadi 2025 with a day-long cultural festival. The charity, registered in the UK since 1983, held its annual Ugadi celebration last Saturday (3) at Sheffield's historic Cutlers Hall. Ugadi, also known as Yugadi in some regions, is the New Year festival celebrated by the people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka states in southern India.
