Down the road from where the explorer Vasco da Gama reportedly lived in Fort Kochi, two alluring white structures linked by a Bauhausian grey iron bridge house Kara, a quaint boutique hotel that is among the newest additions to the local art scene. In the 1960s, the two buildings, which were once part of the Portuguese East India Company’s mint, were acquired by Bengaluru-based art collector Abhishek Poddar’s family from the English, who, in turn, had acquired these from the Dutch.

On a crisp November evening last year, a young actor in a canary yellow sari sat on a scarlet, lip-shaped couch, placed in the corner of a football field-sized stage inside Gwalior’s majestic hilltop fort township. Around her a mix of Indian and international performers—trumpeteers, Rajasthani folk musicians, experimental dancers in tutus, more actors—criss-crossed the field in a choreographed swirl of activity. A partially-lit, centuries-old structure formed the backdrop.
