EL VIATGE […]     I va arribar la nit, i va ser una nit tal, que vam saber que no hi havia ulls humans que poguessin veure-ho i sobreviure-hi. Tothom va sentir això: cap dels guardians, ni italians ni alemanys, va tenir l’ànim de venir a veure què fan els homes quan saben que han de morir.      Cadascú es va acomiadar de la vida de la manera que més se li adeia. Alguns van resar, altres van beure fora mesura, altres es van embriagar amb la darrera passió execrable.

Per i giovani degli anni '50 e '60, erano cose dei loro padri: se ne parlava in famiglia e i ricordi conservavano ancora la freschezza delle cose viste. Per i giovani di questi anni '80, sono cose dei loro nonni: lontane sfumate, «storiche».
