In August 2024, the community union ACORN approached Medact, a health justice charity run by doctors and other health professionals, to join its campaign seeking justice for people evacuated from the Barton House tower block the previous November. Six months on, on 27 February, Medact members delivered a hard-hitting message to a panel of floundering council officials – along with residents and press – in St Annes Board Mill Social Club, just up the road from Barton House.

In 2020, longtime friends Tina and Marilyn sat down for very different lunches at Sunshine Café on East Street in Bedminster. Sausage and mash for the former, an ice cream sundae for the latter. When local street photographer Pitlad strolled in, the pair readily posed for a snap. “I didn’t fancy mains, see,” Tina explained. “I’m having a long sausage!” Marilyn cheekily chimed in, giving everyone the giggles.

As pro-Palestine marches began ‘shrinking’ last year after a huge national in the wake of Israel‘s invasion of Gaza, St Paul’s residents Matt and Sasha drew on their experiences community organising with the ACORN union to try a different way of influencing public opinion. Inspired by their neighbourhood’s history of mobilising against South African apartheid, they hit the streets to knock on doors and chat to shopkeepers, in a bid to make areas of Bristol no-go zones for Israeli produce.
