    Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced it has removed plastic use and switching to paper packaging across its men’s essentials range. That means all of M&S’ men’s socks, woven pyjama sets and almost 40% of underwear lines are now available in FSC-approved paper packaging with paper hooks, which can be recycled at home. The retailer plans to roll out the recyclable packaging more widely to additional products in the men’s essential range, removing an additional 3.5 million units of plastic.

    Google has announced its first-ever power purchase agreement (PPA) for geothermal energy in the East Asian country of Taiwan. The initial projects, developed by Baseload Capital, will add 10MW of power to the grid, with the partnership also including an equity investment in the company. Geothermal energy taps into underground heat to generate clean electricity and is an “around-the-clock” energy source, believed to have significant potential in Taiwan.

    Electricity is now being transported via a new interconnector linking the UK and Ireland. The 504MW Greenlink interconnector, which consists of two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cables and associated converter stations, connects at substations on National Grid’s and EirGrid’s networks. It is expected to help boost the UK and Ireland’s energy security and resilience as well as their capability to harness the potential of clean power by sharing surplus generation.

    A project claimed to be the first-of-its-kind that will use gas from sewage waste to produce clean hydrogen is being delivered in Manchester. United Utilities has joined forces with Cambridge-based climate tech company Levidian to demonstrate the potential of using biogas produced from wastewater to create hydrogen and “super-material” graphene – the thinnest and strongest material – at its wastewater treatment works.
