BREVARD, NC – The Brevard Philharmonic performed its latest concert, “Christmastime in Brevard,” this past weekend. The show, just in time for the holiday season, is the latest in the Brevard Phil’s 2024-2025 concert series, “The Season of Wow!”The Brevard Phil lived up to the season’s name. There were more than a few wow-worthy moments in their cascade of Christmas cheer. “Christmastime in Brevard” was conducted by the orchestra’s artistic director, James C. Fellenbaum.

Everyone, it seems, has a version of the vampire tale up their capes, and it’s common in October to find a coven of dedicated undead thespians haunting a theater near you.

A new “Planet of the Apes” movie comes out the week of May 11. Normally, this would be cause to don my latex monkey suit, grab my notepad and drive over to the theater in time to review it by Monday. Instead, that science-fiction epic is being overshadowed by something even more unreal: my graduation, which happens to be on May 11 too. Instead of an ape costume, I’ll be wearing a much less glamorous cap and gown.

Vampire movies have a rich history in Hollywood. The bloodsuckers appear in cinema from all around the world, and have spawned everything from billion-dollar young-adult franchises to serious black-and-white indie movies about “important topics.” Their versatility is a blessing in this respect. Vampires can be used for virtually anything. However, the vampire’s flexibility is also a curse.

There’s a scene early in A24’s newest movie, Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” that tells the audience everything they need to know about the conflict raging in the film’s near-future United States. In that scene, the first major action sequence of “Civil War,” a water protest has erupted in New York City. On one side, protesters clutch empty water receptacles and wave handmade signs. On the other, riot gear-clad police officers strike out at the growing mass of angry citizens.

April 15, 2024 The Ojibwe singer-songwriter Annie Humphrey opened for Indigo Girls at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts on April 12 with a spare set. With three chairs, a keyboard and a drum set, Humphrey and her bandmates –– Bon Iver’s Sean Carey on drums and guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker –– set the evening’s tone as loving, community-oriented and angry.

Dev Patel, star of movies like “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Green Knight” and “Lion” has leaped into the director’s chair for his latest film. “Monkey Man” is a grimy revenge thriller and bold debut for a new directorial talent. Patel, a wiry 6 feet 2 inches, is an unusual pick for an action hero. He’s far from the muscular bulk of ‘80s icons like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sly Stallone, but also doesn’t resemble the rugged everyman character made iconic by actors like Bruce Willis.

In the beginning, there was darkness. Then, the roar of a packed Schaefer Center for Performing Arts auditorium as the trailer for the 2024 BANFF Mountain Film Festival exploded onto the screen. BANFF has played to excited crowds at App State for 27 years as of March. Featuring short films from around the world by premiere skiers, climbers, bikers and other adventurers, it’s no wonder the Boone community rallies around the event.
