Maal Singh, 68, a neighbour, said he was still in shock. “We have known each other for a very long time. Mostly, we used to meet each other when Sumeet used to take his father out for walks in the society complex. He was a very polite and calm person. We are still in shock over what has happened.”He said Sumeet was a family man and used to take care of his ageing father. He had been extra attentive since Sumeet’s mother passed away 2 years ago.

Raj has asked that workers who are not performing be removed, it is learnt. “Raj saheb said that those functionaries, be it shakha adhyaksh or vibhag adhyaksh, whoever it is, if they are not performing their duties well, an alternative needs to be found for them. He has asked us to submit a report about these functionaries by 30 June,” a party functionary told ThePrint on condition of anonymity. Office-bearers of the party will meet again on 30 June to decide the next course of action.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragedy. I offer heartfelt tributes to those who lost their lives. The NDRF has been deployed, and rescue efforts are ongoing,” he said to the media. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, also Pune’s guardian minister, said to media persons that initial information suggests the bridge was in poor condition. Many tourists were reportedly on it at the time, some with motorcycles. “This could have led to the collapse of the bridge,” said Pawar.
