Dear Editor,The resurgence of pertussis in China was recently reported in this Journal.1 Actually, several countries has witnessed a significant resurgence of pertussis since 2023,2,3 with some experiencing multiple fatalities in a short period.4,5 In the first eight months of 2024 alone, China reported 452,396 cases of pertussis, including 24 deaths (https://www.ndcpa.gov.cn/jbkzzx/c100016/second/list.html).

Highlights•Macrolides should NOT continue to be the first choice for the empirical treatment of pertussis in China. •Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is recommended for current pertussis treatment in China. •Beta-lactam drugs are effective for most ERBP infections and can be used as an alternative therapy. •Research on other pertussis treatments should be promoted immediately in China.
