Jagjit Singh Sohal alias Sharma, one of the premier leaders of the Communist Revolutionary Movement of India and one of the pioneers of the Naxalite movement and CPI(ML) in Punjab, passed away on October 20th. Sohal, who hailed from Shampur village in Sangrur district, was a contemporary of Jagir Singh Joga, Satpal Dang and Harkishan Singh Surjit. He was part of the Communist Party of India when it was headquartered in Lahore.

I M Chagla’s contributions to the legal arena were most commendable with his legacy carving a permanent niche. Chagla’s death has left a void in the legal fraternity which is difficult to substitute. He served as a role model for countless legal professionals. His life work epitomised human rights and protection of the rule of law.

December 9 was 145th birth and 93rd death anniversary of the iconic Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain. She had emerged in the 19th century to revolutionize the concept of womanhood, feminine power, and fighting for women’s rights. Begum Rokeya, a Bengali speaking feminist is a powerful symbol of women’s emancipation. In 1905, she wrote about subjugation and Islamic patriarchy in her novella Sultana’s Dream.
