    CALDWELL — The Vallivue Falcons currently hold the best record in the entire 5A classification. Vallivue has surged to the top of not only the Southern Idaho Conference standings, but the entire state leaderboard. With only one loss this season, the Falcons more than secured their first winning record for the first time since 2019. Their only blemish on the schedule is a loss to Skyview earlier this month. Tuesday night, Vallivue got the chance to avenge that defeat to take control of the 5A SIC.

    Waiting in the wings when he first moved into the district, Owyhee senior Boden Howell took advantage of an increased role this past season. Howell moved to Idaho before his junior season from Oregon, joining a team loaded with future college basketball players. Patiently waiting his turn to become the featured player, he led the Storm to a dominant season and third state title in four years. Howell led Owyhee in scoring with 18.1 points per game, along with 4.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

    For the first time in school history, the Owyhee girls basketball squad took home the 6A state championship trophy, a moment the team and program were building toward since the school opened in 2021. Paving the way for the Storm this season was senior Riley Beck, who led the team in scoring and rebounding and proved to be a force in the paint on a nightly basis.

    Nampa junior Ryan Hirchert has set himself up to make history in his final year of high school wrestling. He became just the second wrestler in school history to be a three-time state champion in March, defeating Brand’n Edstrom of Madison in the 6A 106-pound final at the IHSAA state championships. It was the second year in a row Hirchert got the best of Edstrom at state, winning in the 98-pound final over him as a sophomore.

Today, we begin to reveal the winners for the winter sports with the Girls Wrestling Athlete of the Year. In her final campaign with the Warriors, Meridian senior Elise Twait finished the season with a perfect 45-0 record, winning a third state title in the process.
