MERIDIAN — The longest day of baseball Owyhee has ever played was more than worth it. The Storm could not afford to slip up on day two of the 6A state baseball west qualifier play-in series. After losing to Eagle Friday night, Owyhee faced elimination in all three of its games the following day. And all three times, the Storm answered the call to keep their season alive. They pushed the series to game five, a win-or-go home scenario for both Owyhee and the Mustangs.

MIDDLETON — The new state baseball tournament from the IHSAA has set up a daunting task for those who lose their first game in tournament play hoping to reach the championship series. As the top seed and host of one of two West Qualifiers in the play-in series of the state tournament, Middleton needed just two wins this weekend to advance to the final round of the tournament. One down, one to go.

BOISE — After handing Owyhee its first loss of the season in the semifinals of the 6A District III tournament on Tuesday, Eagle carried that momentum into Thursday night’s championship game. All it took was one inning of hot hitting at the plate for the Mustangs to win their first district title in eight years. A four-spot in the top of the third inning pushed Eagle past Timberline 4-0 at Borah High School.
SOFTBALL DISTRICTS: Cole Valley Christian, Nampa Christian claim district titles

MERIDIAN — Cole Valley Christian has picked up right where they left off last season. The defending 2A state champions moved up to 4A this season under the IHSAA’s new classification system and it hasn’t slowed down the Chargers one bit. Cole Valley matched up with Weiser in the District III championship game Wednesday night. The two played each other twice towards the end of the regular season, splitting the games.
SOFTBALL DISTRICTS: 6A and 5A District III title games for Thursday

Two high school softball district champions will be decided Thursday night in the Treasure Valley. Both the 6A and 5A District III title games begin at 5 p.m., with the 6A game at Borah High School and the 5A game at Skyview High School. Appearing in the 6A District III championship is Eagle, who knocked off previously undefeated Owyhee in the semifinals Tuesday night. The Mustangs, the No. 4 seed in the bracket, held the Storm scoreless through the first six innings in an 8-2 win.
STATE BASEBALL: New postseason format takes center stage

The high school baseball state tournaments look much different this season with the IHSAA sponsoring the postseason for the first time. Instead of an eight-team, single-elimination tournament, the state tournament has been spread out over two weekends to crown champions across five classifications. Three of the five tournaments have 12 teams in action, with the 4A and 2A tournaments sticking with an eight-team field.

MERIDIAN — The Owyhee baseball program has won nearly everything possible in its four years of existence — except for a district title. Winning the state tournament, the last three to be exact, has been the priority for the Storm. But Friday night, Owyhee added a new plaque to its trophy case. Going up against Middleton in the 6A District III championship game, the Storm used a late rally to get past the Vikings.
Skyview holds on for 5A District III crown

CALDWELL — Drama unfolded in the bottom of the seventh inning in the 5A District III championship game. Skyview led Bishop Kelly by two runs entering the final frame, but needed multiple arms to close out the Knights. A leadoff walk and double put two runners on with no outs for Bishop Kelly. The Knights got a run back off the bat of Luca Quilici and had the tying run standing at third base.
SOFTBALL DISTRICTS: Postseason play begins this weekend

The 6A District III tournament begins this Saturday with four play-in games. Among those competing are No. 5 Kuna vs. No. 12 Ridgevue, No. 6 Rocky Mountain vs. No. 11 Borah, No. 7 Boise vs. No. 10 Capital and No. 8 Meridian vs. No. 9 Centennial. The top four seeds — Owyhee, Timberline, Mountain View and Eagle — await the winners for Monday’s quarterfinals. The semifinals are Tuesday and the championship is slated for Thursday, May 8.

With the IHSAA sponsoring the high school baseball state tournaments for the first time this year, district tournaments began last weekend and finish this week. The state tournament begins a week earlier this season with a new super regional format introduced across each class. Already this week, teams are playing in their final games of the season. Others will take part in the new-look state tournaments to be played over two weekends.
