The first time I heard Flipturn, I immediately shared them with everyone I knew. The playful, bouncing riff that opens Sad Disco, paired with the lyric “Summer came in on a Sunday / hit me like a drunk on the subway,” felt effortlessly fresh in the indie-rock scene. It appeared the alogrithm loved them back, and soon replies of “fuck off, I’ve just heard this too! Insane!” were flooding my whatsapp.

It’s been long enough. Spotify Wrapped 2024 sucked. Where was the music taste based on city, connecting us through art across the globe? Where was the detailed personalities that we could all relate over? 2023 format come back. We forgive your glitchy graphics. Like every big corporation, Spotify mine your data (those pesky Terms & Conditions do mean something, unfortunately). So why didn’t they use their intricate and downright terrifying knowledge of our listening habits?

US-Belgian art-jazz-pop duo Zach Phillips and Ma Clément strike hard and fast on their debut album on Fat Possum records. Back in 2021, the duo released a 20-song compilation that dabbled in the lo-fi realm, short sweet tracks that opened and closed in scintillating fashion. An impressive feat, given multi-instrumentalist and producer Zach Phillips is known for a whole host of other projects such as Blanche Blanche Blanche, Perfect Angels, Martyr Group and OSR Tapes.

Orla Gartland’s new album ‘Everybody Needs A Hero’ starts with a sorrowful lamentation on how hard a toxic relationship can be – both the love and the hatred, the fear and the joy, the numbness and the realisation, can be true. She sets the rest of the album up in this way. We might expect the rest of the album to wear this cloak.
