The City of Allen is interested in the purchase of a 2015 Ford Taurus police sedan for the use of the police department. Mayor Ernestine Hall said the vehicle was equipped with what they would need for a police cruiser. Hall said the vehicle currently has around 130,000 miles on it. The seller is asking $4,200 to purchase. “It runs great,” said Hall. “It is really a nice car.”The commission voted to purchase the vehicle contingent on it passing an inspection from a mechanic.

The City of Allen voted at a special called meeting held Monday, Oct. 21 to sell all of the city's vehicles. The city currently has three vehicles that Mayor Erniestine Hall said are unsafe to drive. Hall said the police vehicle is “rotted to the ground” and it would be a danger to have anyone drive it. The city also owns a van that is in a similar state.

The City of Allen welcomes a new mayor, Ernestine Hall, this month after Elmer Parsons stepped down for personal health-related reasons. Hall said this transition may be hard on former Mayor Elmer Parsons. “I’m certain it’s going to be a little hard on Fud (Elmer) because he has been a great asset to this city,” said Hall. “Everybody loves him. Allen Lafferty officially submitted his resignation to the Floyd County Tourism Commission after a long absence from meetings. Floyd County Tourism Commissioner Missy Allen let the commission know Lafferty would be resigning and that Floys Judge-Executive Robbie Williams would be appointing a new member to serve out the remainder of Lafferty’s term. Allen said at the request of the commission and Judge Executive Williams she reached out to Lafferty.

Much of the discussion at the regularly scheduled City of Allen Commission meeting held on Monday, Sept. 9, centered around the city’s need for a new police officer. Mayor Elmer Parsons said an ad had been placed in the newspaper for the new officer position, but no qualified applicants have applied. Commissioner Ernestine Hall said the city is in need of a police officer as soon as possible due to risks in the community including a young boy seen carrying a gun in the area.

The annual Battle of Middle Creek reenactment weekend is set to take place Spet. 6 through Sept. 8 at the Middle Creek Battlefield, located at 2968 Ky. 114 in Prestonsburg. Friends of Middle Creek member and Reenactor Patrick Davis said they are still trying to bounce back from the pandemic, a problem he said many battle reenactors have been facing. “We’ve been trying to find new individuals who might want to come out,” said Patrick. “We’re trying to get new reenactor units interested.

Southern Water and Sewer District held their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Aug. 26. The board discussed many of the ongoing projects including new water lines and updating the water treatment plant. Environmental Design Consultants' Tim Campoy said the model has been completed for the 680 water line project. The crew has been working on checking pressure zones throughout the area. This should be completed within the next week.
