DEAL OF THE WEEK Scribner Traps Bird’s ‘Scoundrel’ Scribner v-p and executive editor Rick Horgan bought world rights to Kai Bird’s American Scoundrel: Roy Cohn and the World He Made for mid-six figures in a five-house auction. Bird is a coauthor of American Prometheus, the Pulitzer Prize–winning 2005 biography of Robert J. Oppenheimer. Scribner described American Scoundrel as a portrait of the titular “super-lawyer, fixer, and gossip-fixated social networker” who was a mentor to Donald Trump.

DEAL OF THE WEEK One Signal Rides Glass’s ‘Rainbow’ Psychotherapist Sara Glass sold Black Skirt, Rainbow Soul to One Signal in a six-figure, world rights agreement. The memoir, subtitled My Journey to an Authentic Self and set for spring 2024, was acquired by Julia Cheiffetz and Nick Ciani in a preempt. Harvey Klinger at Harvey Klinger Inc.

DEAL OF THE WEEK Harper Wave Signs Psychiatry Book For Harper Wave, Karen Rinaldi won world rights to Godfrey Pearlson and Susannah Cahalan’s A World of Their Own: Making Sense of Madness for six figures at auction. Mark Gottlieb at Trident Media Group represented Pearlson, a professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Holt Takes Mantel Memoir Henry Holt v-p and executive editor Tim Duggan acquired North American rights to A Memoir of My Former Self: A Life in Writing by Hilary Mantel. The bestselling and critically acclaimed author, who died in 2022, is best known for her Wolf Hall trilogy; the first two books in the series won the Booker Prize.

Grove Buys Booker Longlistee In Ascension by Scottish author Martin MacInnes was acquired by Morgan Entrekin at Grove Atlantic. The novel, recently longlisted for the Booker Prize, was published in the U.K. earlier this year; Grove plans to release a paperback edition in February 2024. David Forrer at InkWell Management brokered the North American rights agreement. The novel has been compared to works by writers such as Emily St. John Mandel and Colson Whitehead.

Holt Falls for Wolff Michael Wolff, who previously scored three big hits with books critical of former president Trump, has sold The Fall: The End of Fox News and the Murdoch Dynasty to Sarah Crichton at Henry Holt. In addition to Trump, Fox owner Rupert Murdoch has been one of Wolff’s favorite subjects; he is the author of the Murdoch biography The Man Who Owns the News.

Rapp’s ‘Wolf’ Howls at LB In a world rights agreement, Ben George at Little, Brown bought Adam Rapp’s Wolf at the Table. Rapp, a novelist who’s also written for the stage and screen, is currently the showrunner on the Showtime series American Rust and was a Pulitzer finalist for his 2006 play Red Light Winter.

Booker Nominee Goes to Grove Grove Atlantic editorial director Elisabeth Schmitz acquired Paul Lynch’s Prophet Song, which was recently longlisted for the Booker Prize. Grove described the novel as “an ambitious, highly original, and surprisingly intimate dive into how democratic societies might slide into autocracy and civil war.” Schmitz bought North American rights from Simon Trewin at Simon Trewin Creative in the U.K., where One World will publish the book this September.
