One evening during the Summer Olympics last August, I wandered through central Paris at dusk with a friend. We watched on a café TV as the American sprinter Noah Lyles narrowly won the hundred-meter dash and became the fastest man in the world, then we continued down the stately rue de Rivoli and through the archway leading to the vast expanse of the Louvre courtyard, where I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid is illuminated from within.
