    Since Oct. 7, Jewish communities around the world have grappled with enormous and previously unthinkable events: the massacre of 1,200 Israelis, a global surge in antisemitism and, most recently, Hamas’s brutal execution of six hostages. With each tragic step along the way, our educators here in North America have recognized the need to pivot and adapt their approaches to teaching in this environment. But they need guidance to do so.

    As we witness a dramatic increase in antisemitic sentiment and behavior, shared without inhibition or fear of consequences, we may feel we are living in a once-unimaginable reality. Although this may not surprise those with an awareness of history and Jews who have been affected directly by hate, data demonstrate that many non-Jews fail to identify Jew-hatred in its contemporary forms.

    American society was already polarized before the October 7 War, particularly around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But even that reality couldn’t prepare us for the dynamic we’ve seen on college campuses and opinion pages since the Hamas massacre. The conversation has shifted from a discussion about the appropriate Israeli response to terror and the treatment of Palestinians to a referendum on Israel’s very right to exist and the delegitimization of those of us who are committed to that right.

    As an educator focused on Israel Studies and understanding Jew-hatred, I have spoken with dozens of audiences — some friendly, some hostile — and appeared on panels at multiple schools, universities, and houses of worship since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7. In some ways, these panels are a lot like those I’ve done for years, with plenty of finger-pointing, raised voices, dueling accusations, and coded language thrown at me.
