The feeling of waking up as a national champion is still surreal to Carlin Hartman. Even as he is juggling being a parent, recruiting players and planning for next season − he is in a busy time in the wake of the NCAA Tournament. Hartman, a 1990 Grand Island High School graduate, is associate head coach of the Florida men’s basketball team, which won the national championship April 7 with a 65-63 victory against Houston in San Antonio.

Summer Hemphill has witnessed Kristen Sharkey’s evolution in coaching. Hemphill joined the University at Buffalo women’s basketball team in 2016, after the Bulls made the NCAA Tournament for the first time and a little more than a year into Sharkey’s seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Bulls. Now, Hemphill is on a career path akin to Sharkey’s. UB introduced Sharkey as its head coach Wednesday at Alumni Arena.

Harris, a former University at Buffalo standout and a Bishop Timon-St. Jude graduate, finished his final season at UB in 2017 and trained for a professional football career. The defensive end had workouts with the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers, but he didn’t hear his name called in the 2018 NFL draft. UB announced Tuesday that Hemphill, a former Bulls standout, will join the coaching staff of new head coach Kristen Sharkey. Hemphill is a Cardinal O’Hara graduate who will join Allison Spaschak and Damon Jones as assistant coaches for the Bulls. Hemphill was an assistant coach with the Daemen women’s basketball team for the last three seasons.

University at Buffalo football coach Pete Lembo’s contract extension earlier this year came with an assurance for the program. University at Buffalo football coach Pete Lembo will receive a raise of $50,000, after UB announced his contract extension Feb. 11. UB athletic director Mark Alnutt said in February that the program’s salary pool for coordinators, assistant coaches and staff will increase by $200,000, to be used at the discretion of Lembo, in his second season as UB’s coach.
