St Mary the Virgin church in Gillingham has launched an appeal for funds as it faces a bill of over £350,000 for repairs to the roof. The passage of time and the stormy weather experienced in recent years have resulted in numerous leaks which need to be fixed as soon as possible before things deteriorate further, say the church authorities. These leaks have caused staining which is unsightly and makes the building unpleasant to use as well as damp, causing further deterioration, they say.
