    As I walk alongside the moat which wraps protectively around The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens in Wells, I can see an adult swan with very plumped up feathers and macho body language, chasing two ‘teenage’ cygnets, at speed, along the top of the water. The cygnets, whose feathers have nearly all turned white now, are paddling as fast as their adolescent webbed palmates will let them, before they leap, very swiftly, for the grass bank to make their escape.
