The Bylines Cymru community has debated when austerity actually began in the UK. In 2008? During the Thatcher era that planted the seeds of feral 'neoliberalism'? For the purposes of our February-long Austerity Project, we'll start from its formal 2010 introduction by Prime Minister David Cameron, his Chancellor George Osborne, and their coalition with Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats. The outcomes of their programme continue to resound through lives and communities today, every day.

It feels very 2024 that what may be one of the worst electoral scandals in British history still slinks by with barely a blink from the electorate or fourth estate. People - and non-people? - living abroad can join the Conservative Party and vote in its leadership election. They helped hand the highest power in the land to Johnson, Truss, and Sunak, while the vast majority of us who actually live here had no say whatsoever.
