A sponge, a starfish, a squid and a squirrel walk onto a stage …Rather than the lead-up to a joke, this describes Bishop Watterson High School’s spring production, SpongeBobSquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Just as it sounds, the show is a song- and dance-filled story about the popular television characters living in Bikini Bottom.

As the seasons change this month, and winter slides slowly into spring, Whetstone High School’s theater program has chosen to perform a musical featuring, aptly, the Greek goddess of spring. Hadestown: Teen Edition opens at the Whetstone Academy of Performing Arts at the end of the month. A hit Broadway musical, Hadestown is a play on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The musical premiered on Broadway in 2019 and won eight Tony Awards out of 14 nominations.

Dominion Middle School’s drama department will be overrun this month with drama, bullying, cattiness and mean girls – Mean Girls, that is. For the spring musical this year, drama teacher Emily Whittaker has chosen for students to perform Mean Girls Jr., a modified version of the Broadway musical based on the popular 2004 film. The rock musical premiered on Broadway in 2018, and a film version of the musical came out last year.

With a huge candy-giving holiday coming up this month, the Clintonville Spotlight managed to grab a few moments with the very busy Stacey Durst, one of the owners of Colonial Candy – a Clintonville staple. Folks might remember visiting the little store on North High Street during the past several decades. The storefront is now home to Destination Donuts, 3519 N. High St.Colonial Candy is now online-only. But tasty candies for Valentine’s Day and beyond are still right here in the neighborhood.
