On a swelteringly hot day in Chandler, Arizona, in July 1991, Jane’s Addiction was set to take the stage on the first date for Lollapalooza, a new traveling alternative music festival that the band’s frontman, Perry Farrell, has conceived. You know the perfect party when you feel it. The right details certainly help - whether it’s flowers and overflowing champagne coupés or red Solo cups and balloons - but a great gathering always comes down to the vibe. The feeling that wherever you turn, there’s another fascinating guest to meet and maybe even laugh or dance with. The confidence that within this magic bubble of a venue - a house, an apartment, a club, a sprawling event space - the promise of more fun awaits.

Samantha Bee was 47 years old when she found herself sobbing at the doctor’s office. The comedian and former prime-time talk show host went in for her annual appointment but burst into tears after her gynecologist asked how she was doing. “I was like, ‘I never sleep. I get my period every eight days, I don’t know what is going on with my body, my job is so hard,’” Bee, now 55, recalled in a phone call.
