Three weeks after my third book came out, I experienced the first unmasked autistic shutdown of my life. What happened was this: driven into the ground by overwhelm—over-stimulated from doing larger events than I was accustomed to doing and feeling visible to readers in ways I’d never been before—I found myself unable to speak for much of the next twenty-four hours.

Of the three books I’ve published so far, Bugsy and Other Stories is by far the most personal. Even though I wouldn’t describe any of these stories as works of autofiction, I would still say that I have shared many of the characters’ struggles and neuroses – facets of being human that transcend whether or not a character looks like me, grew up where I grew up, et cetera.

When I wrote “Like and Subscribe”—the second-to-last story in Bugsy & Other Stories—I fully intended it as fan fiction about Belle Delphine, the e-girl who has ingeniously exploited the peccadilloes of horny gamer dudes to the tune of millions, both in terms of followers and personal wealth (though it could be argued that those categories are fairly fungible in a world as digital as Delphine’s).
