The best movie I’ve seen this year is Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, a political drama about the state repression of the thousands of Iranians who took to the streets of Tehran and elsewhere in protest of the death of Mahsa Amini, murdered by religious police for not wearing a hijab.

Just when it seemed that former President Donald J. Trump’s interview at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) conference couldn’t get any worse — Trump had already impugned the credibility and professionalism of the all-black panel of women journalists, whose conduct he described as “disgraceful” and whose questioning he called “nasty” — it did: Trump accused Kamala D. Harris of lying about her racial heritage.

On December 5, the congressional Committee on Education and the Workforce grilled the presidents of three of our most elite universities — Harvard University’s Claudine Gay, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sally Kornbluth, and the University of Pennsylvania’s M. Elizabeth Magill. In this five-hour hearing, the Republicans, who predominate on the committee, were the most brutal. This is not surprising.

The only silver lining in the Supreme Court’s rejection of affirmative action in higher education is that it has prompted much-needed soul-searching among affirmative action’s supporters. Many of us have long harbored serious concerns about how it has been conceived and executed, but have feared that voicing those concerns would do more harm than good. Convinced that it was better to have a flawed means of leveling the playing field than to have none at all, we sat on our objections.
