1 INTRODUCTION Climatological standard normals (hereafter referred to as normals or climate normals) are averages of climatological data calculated for consecutive periods of 30 years, starting on 1 January of a year ending with the digit 1, and ending on 31 December of a year ending with the digit 0: for example, 1 January 1971 to 31 December 2000 (WMO, 2017b).
