I remarked recently that for every student trying to figure out which pronouns might apply to them, there’s a whole class trying to figure out what pronouns actually are. That prompted some to suggest I was taking a swipe at woke culture. Well, yes and no.

For decades, Americans have cited Michigan Republican Sen. Arthur Vandenberg's 1947 admonition that, while Washington may bicker over domestic conflicts, "partisan politics stops at the water's edge." His suggestion wasn't that elected officials always saw eye-to-eye on foreign policy - some were internationalists and others isolationists. But it was a reminder that our strategy overseas was moored less in self-interest than the principles of freedom, self-determination, and national sovereignty.
