ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The College Football Playoff staff recommended updating the strength of schedule metrics used in the selection process and hopes to have a new Playoff format in place by the fall. But talks this week reached a reset on what that format will be for 2026 and beyond. “I wouldn’t say there’s a leading contender right now for them, but they’re taking a good look and a fresh look at it,” CFP executive director Rich Clark said Wednesday.

Eighteen months from the start of the 2026 College Football Playoff, the event has no format, and the people in charge of putting one together are hitting the reset button on the topic. That’s a reset, not quite a restart. Everybody involved seems keen on the idea of expanding the 12-team model that will be used this season, which itself features a tweak on the inaugural 12-team Playoff’s seeding structure. Sixteen teams is the most likely number, because bigger is the easiest thing to agree upon.

Eight female athletes filed an appeal of the House v. NCAA settlement Wednesday in a California federal court, arguing that the landmark agreement violates Title IX. The appeal only addresses the back damages portion of the settlement, not the portion that establishes the system of direct revenue sharing with athletes. The watershed settlement, approved late Friday night by federal judge Claudia Wilken, has been years in the making.

There is no momentum whatsoever to have more games beyond the first round played on campus. And right now the idea of moving up the season so the CFP can be done earlier seems to be a nowhere conversation. Of course, the format is taking up all the oxygen.

@davidubben @ralphDrussoATH The only reason to move to 16 is to give the top 4 a home playoff game. If they keep it at 12 but have the first two rounds on campus, semis on new year's day & the final where it used to be for the 4 team playoff. Solves so many issues.
