March 26, 2024, marks the 25th anniversary of operations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). Located about 30 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in the Chihuahuan Desert, WIPP is the nation’s only deep geologic repository for the disposal of nuclear waste, and is legally restricted to disposal of defense-related transuranic (TRU) waste.
